Why take out business insurance as a cleaner or cleaning company

Cleaning work puts you inside your clients' homes and premises, surrounded by their property.

  • Someone is hurt on a job. A slip on a floor you've just cleaned, or a trip over a cable or a machine.

  • You damage a client's property. A product marks a worktop or a floor, or a machine catches a fitting.

  • Something you were trusted to work around is damaged. That's third-party objects and sites, and for cleaning the limit is far higher than for other trades.

Public liability covers what you owe the other party, up to your cover limit. A single claim can strain a small business's cash flow, and cover is what keeps that decision yours.

What is Public Liability insurance?

If a client or a member of the public holds you responsible for injuring them or damaging their property, public liability insurance covers what you owe them, up to your cover limit.

What does it cover?

Injury or property damage caused to others in the course of your work. You choose a cover limit of €1.25 million, €2.5 million or €6.5 million per claim, with €2.5 million as the default, and up to twice your chosen limit per insurance year.

Third-party objects and sites is included as standard, covering damage to equipment or premises belonging to others while they're in your care, up to €500,000 per claim and €1 million per insurance year. Employers' liability can be added if you have staff, at €13 million per claim and €13 million per year, covering a claim from an employee injured or made ill by their work.

Cover that fits your profession

You describe your activities fully at sign-up, and your cover matches what you actually do: cleaning private homes, offices and commercial premises, interior and exterior cleaning, carpet cleaning, window cleaning and the related tasks you declare.

Your excess

The amount you pay yourself towards a claim. Up to €500,000 annual revenue the options are €0, €250, €500 (default), €1,000 and €2,500. Above €500,000 the options are €500, €1,000 (default) and €2,500.

Is it mandatory?

Public liability isn't required by law in Ireland. However, many clients, letting agents, facilities managers and local authorities require proof of cover before they'll let you on site. Cover starts from €7.55 per month.

Who needs it?

Anyone cleaning other people's homes or premises, whether you work alone or run a team.

Answers to your questions about our insurance for cleaners

Is public liability insurance mandatory for cleaners in Ireland?

Public liability isn't required by law in Ireland, but in practice it is often essential. Clients, letting agents, facilities managers and local authorities frequently ask to see proof of cover before they let you work on their premises. Without it you can lose work, and a single injury or property-damage claim could cost far more than the premium. For a cleaning business it is usually the first cover to put in place. Cover starts from €7.55 per month.

I clean inside my clients' homes and offices. Am I covered for damage I cause there?

Yes. Public liability covers damage you accidentally cause to a third party's property while you work, such as marking a worktop with a cleaning product or catching a fitting with a machine. Damage to premises or objects that are in your care is covered by the third-party objects and sites cover included in your policy, up to €500,000 per claim and €1 million per insurance year. Declare your activities fully at sign-up so the cover matches the work you actually do.

Which cover limit should I choose?

You can choose €1.25 million, €2.5 million or €6.5 million per claim, and up to twice that amount per insurance year. Larger commercial, facilities or public-sector contracts often specify a minimum limit in the contract itself, so check what your clients ask for before you decide.

Can I add cover for the people who work for me?

Yes. Employers' Liability can be added as an optional cover, with a limit of €13 million per claim, if you have staff. It covers your legal liability if an employee is injured or becomes ill because of their work. If you take on employees or regular helpers it is worth adding, so a workplace injury claim is covered. You can choose it when you build your quote.

How much does cleaning business insurance cost, and how quickly can I get it?

Public liability starts from €7.55 per month. Your actual premium depends on your turnover, the cover limit you choose and your excess, which is the amount you pay yourself towards a claim, so the final price is tailored to your business. You can get a quote online and be insured within 2 minutes, ask questions before you commit, and there is no long-term commitment.
