Why take out business insurance as a hairdresser?
Hairdressing puts you within arm's reach of your client all day. Here is why dedicated hairdresser insurance matters:
A treatment can go wrong: a colour reaction, a nick from the scissors or a burn from hot tongs can leave a client claiming for injury.
Someone is injured in the salon: Wet floors, trailing cables, and a waiting area full of people.
A stylist or apprentice is hurt at work. That's a claim from an employee, which public liability doesn't answer. Employers' liability can be added, with a limit of €13 million per claim.
Public liability covers what you owe the client, up to your cover limit. Home hairdressing is covered too, as long as you declare it when you get your quote.

What is public liability insurance?
If a third party, like a client or a member of the public, holds you responsible for an injury or for damage to their property, public liability insurance takes care of your defence costs and any compensation due.
What does it cover?
Injury or property damage caused to others in the course of your hairdressing work. You choose a cover limit of €1.25 million, €2.5 million or €6.5 million per claim. Optional cover can be added: employers' liability (€13 million per claim) if you have staff.
Cover that fits your profession
You describe your activities fully at sign-up, and your cover matches what you actually do: cutting and colouring, shaving and trimming, home hairdressing, and the beauty products you sell alongside your services.
Is it mandatory?
Public liability isn't required by law in Ireland. However, many landlords, salon owners renting you a chair, shopping centres, and local-authority permits often require proof of cover before you can work. Cover starts from €7.55 per month.
Who needs it?
Any hairdresser or barber who works with clients in person: in your own salon, renting a chair in someone else's, or visiting clients at home.

What does our insurance cover for hairdressers?
Our cover for hairdressers is built around public liability, with an optional cover you can add to match your situation.
Public liability: responds if a client or another third party suffers an injury, or their property is damaged, in the course of your work. It takes care of your defence costs and any compensation due. You choose a cover limit of €1.25 million, €2.5 million or €6.5 million per claim.
Employers' liability (optional): if you employ stylists or apprentices, this covers your liability as an employer, with a limit of €13 million per claim.
What you pay towards a claim: your excess. If your turnover is up to €500,000, you can choose €0, €250, €500, €1,000 or €2,500. Above that the options are €500, €1,000 or €2,500.

How to choose the right insurance as a hairdresser?
Criteria to compare:
The cover offered: check that the policy matches the real risks of salon work: client injuries during treatments, reactions to the products you use, and damage you might cause to the spaces you work in. Make sure every service you offer is covered, from cutting and colouring to shaving and home visits.
The price: compare premiums, but prioritise cover that fits hairdressing. An attractive price can hide exclusions that matter for your services.
The cover limit: check what the people who ask you for proof of cover expect to see, and make sure the limit you pick clears it.
The excess: find out what stays at your own expense when a claim happens, whether it is a reaction to a treatment or an accident on your floor.
The exclusions: read the exclusions list before you buy and check it against everything you actually offer. A service you have not declared is not covered, so list your full price list at sign-up.
The service: an accident can happen at any moment. Choose an insurer that is easy to reach and understands the hair and beauty sector. At Insify, our online support team knows the specifics of your work.
Mistakes to avoid: don't settle for a generic policy that ignores the risks of hairdressing. Make sure your liability is properly covered, whether clients come to your chair or you go to them. To secure your business today, discover our public liability insurance.

Answers to your questions about our insurance for hairdressers
Public liability cover for a hairdresser starts from €7.55 per month with Insify. What you actually pay depends on your turnover, the services you offer, how many people you employ, and the cover limit and excess you choose. A salon with 4 stylists will not pay the same as a mobile hairdresser working alone. You can see your own price online in a few minutes, and adjust the cover limit and excess to see how each one moves the premium.
Public liability insurance isn't required by law in Ireland. What happens in practice is different: the people you deal with commercially usually insist on it. A landlord letting you a unit, a salon owner renting you a chair, a shopping centre, and a local authority granting a permit will all typically ask for proof of cover first. Having cover in place also means you are not personally exposed if a client claims against you after an injury.
If a client suffers an injury, such as an allergic reaction or a burn, and holds you legally responsible, public liability responds to the claim: it takes care of your defence costs and any compensation due. Patch testing and keeping a record of the products used on each client remain your first line of defence, and they make a claim much easier to handle. Describe all the services you offer when you get your quote, so your cover matches the treatments you actually carry out.
Yes. Home hairdressing is one of the activities included, and your cover extends to the use of land, buildings or premises for your insured activity, so working from a rented chair is covered too. The important thing is to declare how you work when you take out the policy. If you start visiting clients at home after you have bought your cover, tell us, so the policy keeps matching your real situation.
The excess is the part of a claim you pay yourself. If a claim settles at €4,000 and your excess is €500, you pay €500 and Insify pays €3,500. If your turnover is up to €500,000, you can choose €0, €250, €500, €1,000 or €2,500. Above that the options are €500, €1,000 or €2,500. A higher excess usually lowers your monthly premium, but it leaves more out of pocket when something happens. A lower excess costs a little more each month and limits surprises.
Yes. Trade in beauty products such as shampoos, creams, lotions, nail polish, scissors and tweezers is one of the activities included, so a liability claim arising from a product you retail alongside your services is within scope. Trade in medicines or pharmaceutical products, including over-the-counter drugs, is excluded. A retail line that strays into that territory is not covered. If you are unsure which side of the line a product sits on, describe it at sign-up rather than assuming.
Your liability as an employer is covered by employers' liability, which you can add as an optional cover with a limit of €13 million per claim. It is not compulsory in Ireland. It is the cover that responds if a member of your team is injured at work and holds you responsible. Declare your headcount accurately when you get your quote: cover is available up to 30 people and up to €10 million of turnover.
No. Public liability covers injury and damage you cause to other people and their property, not damage to things you own. Cover for your own chairs, basins, dryers, tools and stock is not part of what Insify offers in Ireland today, so you would need to arrange that separately. If that is your main concern, it is worth saying so before you buy, so you are clear about what this policy does and does not do.
