Why take out business insurance as a beauty salon?

You work on people all day, and if a treatment goes wrong, the claim comes to you.

  • A treatment can go wrong: A colour, a wax or a nail treatment causes a burn, a reaction or an infection, and the client holds you responsible.

  • Someone is injured in the salon. Wet floors, trailing cables, hot tools, and a waiting area full of people.

Public liability covers what you owe the client, up to your cover limit. And whether you own your salon, rent a chair or travel to clients, your cover follows the activities you declare when you get your quote.

What is Public Liability insurance?

If a third party, like a client or a member of the public, holds you responsible for an injury or for damage to their property, public liability insurance takes care of your defence costs and any compensation due.

What does it cover?

Injury or property damage caused to others in the course of your coaching work. You choose a cover limit of €1.25 million, €2.5 million or €6.5 million per claim. Optional covers can be added: Employers' Liability (€13 million per claim) if you have staff, and Third-party objects and sites for damage to equipment or premises of others in your care (up to €5,000 per claim).

Cover that fits your profession

You describe your activities fully at sign-up, and your cover matches what you actually do: hair, skin care, nail styling, make-up, manicures and pedicures, relaxation massages, and colour and styling advice.

Is it mandatory?

Public liability isn't required by law in Ireland. However, many landlords, shopping centres and local authorities require proof of cover before you can trade on their premises. Cover starts from €7.55 per month.

Who needs it?

Any salon owner, beautician, nail technician or mobile beauty professional who treats clients in person.

How to choose the right insurance as a beauty salon?

Criteria to compare:

  • The cover offered: Check that the policy matches the real risks of salon work: a reaction or a burn from a treatment, and injury to a client or a passer-by on your premises. Make sure every service on your price list is covered.

  • The price: Compare premiums, but prioritise cover that fits salon and treatment work. An attractive price can hide exclusions that matter for your activity.

  • The excess: Find out what stays at your own expense when a claim happens, whether it is a reaction to a treatment or an accident in the salon.

  • The exclusions: Watch out for exclusions specific to beauty work: services you did not declare, missing qualifications, anything invasive or medical, and marketing that promises guaranteed results.

  • The service: An incident can happen at any moment. Choose an insurer that is easy to reach and understands salon work. At Insify, our online support team knows the specifics of your work.

Mistakes to avoid: Do not settle for a generic policy that ignores the risks of hands-on beauty work. Make sure your liability is properly covered, whatever the treatment and wherever you work. To secure your business today, discover our Public Liability insurance.

Answers to your questions about our insurance for beauty salons

How much does salon insurance cost in Ireland?

The price depends on your annual revenue, the services you declare, your headcount, and the cover limit and excess you choose. At Insify, Public Liability for a beauty salon starts from €7.55 per month. A personalised quote takes a few minutes online, and you can adjust the cover limit and the excess to see how each one moves your premium.

Is public liability insurance mandatory for a beauty salon in Ireland?

Public Liability is not required by law in Ireland. However, the landlord of your unit, the shopping centre or building you trade in, and your local authority will usually ask for proof of cover, and many salons will not let you rent a chair without it. Having cover in place also means you are not personally exposed if a client claims against you after a treatment goes wrong.

Am I covered if a client has a reaction to a treatment?

If a client holds you responsible for a burn, a reaction, or an infection that followed a treatment, Public Liability takes care of your defence costs and any compensation due. Your cover matches the services you declare when you apply, so list everything you offer at sign-up. Some treatments are excluded whoever performs them, including anything invasive such as microblading, microneedling or injections, and any laser or medical treatment.

Are microblading, botox and laser treatments covered?

No. Invasive measures such as microblading, microneedling, botox injections, or any other form of injection are excluded, as are laser treatments and medical treatments. Permanent make-up, hair implantation or permanent removal, and the application or removal of piercings and tattoos are also excluded, other than ear piercings. These are exclusions on the cover itself, so they apply however experienced or qualified you are and whatever the treatment is called.

Do I need employers' liability cover if my salon has staff?

Employers' Liability is not compulsory in Ireland, but it covers your liability as an employer if a member of your staff is injured at work, for example, a stylist who slips on a wet floor or a junior who develops dermatitis from handling products. It can be added to your policy with a cover limit of €13 million per claim. If you employ anyone, including part-time or trainee staff, it is worth adding.

What is an excess and which one should I choose?

The excess is the part of a claim you pay yourself. If a claim settles at €4,000 and your excess is €500, you pay €500 and Insify pays €3,500. If your annual revenue is €500,000 or less, the options are €0, €250, €500, €1,000 and €2,500. Above €500,000 the options are €500, €1,000 and €2,500. A higher excess usually lowers your premium but leaves more out of pocket when a claim happens; a lower excess costs a little more each month and limits surprises.
