Why business insurance is essential as a tech and digital professional
Cients build their operations on what you deliver. From a data migration to a system you host and maintain, these activities share common exposures:
Mistakes in your work: a bug that gets through, a flawed data migration, or an analysis that leads a client to the wrong decision.
Deliverables that don't do what was agreed: a build that misses the specification, or a system that doesn't perform as promised.
Security incidents: a vulnerability you introduced, or client systems, networks or data affected by something that went wrong on your side.
Accidents on a client's site: damage or injury you cause during a meeting or an installation.
Professional indemnity covers the client's financial loss and the cost of defending you. Public liability covers the injury and the damage.

What is Public Liability insurance?
How does it work: If a third party, like a client or a member of the public, holds you responsible for an injury or for damage to their property, Public Liability insurance takes care of your defence costs and any compensation due.
What does it cover: Injury or property damage caused to others in the course of your work. You choose a cover limit of €1.25 million, €2.5 million or €6.5 million per claim. Optional cover can be added: Employers' Liability (€13 million per claim) if you have staff.
Cover that fits your profession: You describe your activities fully at sign-up, and your cover matches what you actually do: whether you write software, manage IT systems, run cybersecurity audits or host websites.
Your excess: The amount you pay yourself towards a claim. The options are €0, €250, €500, €1,000 and €2,500, with €0 and €250 available up to €500,000 annual revenue; above that the minimum is €500.
Is it mandatory: Public liability isn't required by law in Ireland. Clients, co-working spaces or public bodies may still ask you to hold it before a project starts. Cover starts from €7.55 per month.
Who needs it: Any tech or digital business that meets clients, visits sites or works on others' premises: developers, IT consultants, systems integrators and web hosts.

What is Professional Indemnity insurance?
Professional Indemnity covers the purely financial loss a client suffers because of a mistake in your professional work: wrong advice, a miscalculation, a missed detail, or an error in something you delivered. It doesn't cover injury or damage to property, that is Public Liability.
What counts as a professional mistake: For tech work, that could be a coding error, a flawed integration, wrong technical advice, or a security gap that causes a client financial loss.
Who is it for: People whose work is advice, expertise or deliverables rather than hands-on work: developers, software engineers, IT consultants, cybersecurity specialists and web hosting providers.
How does the cover respond: It's written on a claims-made basis: the claim must be made and reported to us while your policy runs. If you switch to us from another insurer, work from up to 5 years back is covered, provided your previous policy would have covered the claim. Leaving? Claims about work done while you were insured must be reported before your policy ends, unless run-off cover is arranged.
Cover that fits your profession: You select your activities when you apply, so the policy and its exclusions match what you actually advise on and deliver. Keep in mind that promising or guaranteeing results is excluded. You choose a cover limit from €125,000 up to €1.25 million per claim, and up to twice that per insurance year.
Is it mandatory: Professional indemnity isn't required by law in Ireland, though clients, agencies and public-sector contracts frequently make it a condition of working with you. Cover starts from €10.80 per month.

Which cover do you need?
Most businesses are exposed to both. One covers injury and damage, the other financial loss from your work. You can combine them in one Insify policy. Cover limits, excess and exclusions apply. See the policy wording.
Public Liability insurance
Covers claims when your work injures someone or damages something that belongs to them. For example, someone trips over your equipment, or you damage a floor while working at a client's premises.

Frequently Asked Questions
Most tech and digital businesses benefit from both. Professional indemnity is usually the priority, because your main exposure is the financial loss a client suffers from a mistake in your work: a coding error, wrong advice or a flawed integration. Public liability matters whenever you meet clients, visit their sites or work on others' premises, covering injury or property damage you might cause. You can hold either on its own or both together, depending on how you work.
Yes, your professional work in this area is covered: consulting and support on software, system and network security, including audits and vulnerability or penetration testing, all sit within the covered activities. What the policy responds to is your liability to clients. For example, if a mistake in your security work causes a client a financial loss, professional indemnity can respond. It is not a cyber policy for your own systems, so make sure the activities you actually carry out are declared when you apply.
Professional indemnity is written on a claims-made basis, which means the claim has to be made against you and reported to us while your policy is active, not simply that the work happened during the policy. If you switch to us from another insurer, work from up to 5 years back can be covered, provided your previous policy would have covered the claim. If you stop trading or leave, claims about work you did while insured must be reported before the policy ends, unless run-off cover is arranged.
It isn't required by law in Ireland. In practice, clients, agencies and public-sector contracts frequently make it a condition of working with you, and some regulators and professional bodies require it. Even where it isn't demanded, it is one of the most relevant covers for the sector, because a single professional error can lead to a substantial client claim. You describe your activities when you apply so the cover matches what you do.
Professional Indemnity cover starts from €10.80 per month and Public Liability from €7.55 per month, both including taxes. The actual premium depends on your activity, turnover, cover amount and excess, so a solo developer and an established software house will not pay the same. You see your price online in minutes, with no obligation.
