Why take out business insurance as a marketing professional?

Marketing, PR and advertising work turns on advice and creative judgement, and both can be disputed:

  • Client claims of financial loss: an error in work you delivered, a missed detail in a launch, or advice a client says cost them money.

  • Contracts and tenders: client contracts and public tenders often set insurance requirements, so it is worth checking what yours ask for before you sign.

  • Work away from your desk: shoots, events, exhibition stands and client site visits mean an accident can happen in someone else's space.

Cover does not stop a dispute happening, and it does not cover everything: the exclusions below matter. Within the cover limit and excess you choose, a covered claim is paid rather than absorbed by the business.

What is Public Liability insurance?

Your public liability insurance protects you and your business when you, your employees or your products accidentally cause harm to a third party; whether that's injury to someone or damage to their property. It means a simple accident does not have to become a bill you pay yourself, subject to your excess and to the exclusions set out lower down this page.

If there's a chance a client could hold you liable for purely financial loss, it's worth also considering Professional Indemnity cover.

How does it work?

You tell us your activities and choose your cover limit and your excess, which is the part of any claim you pay yourself. If an accident during your work injures someone or damages their property, your policy covers the third-party claim and your defence costs.

Cover that fits your work

Public liability adapts to what you actually do, at client offices, on shoots, at events and exhibitions, or on your own premises. You select your activities when you apply, so the policy matches your real day-to-day risks.

Is public liability insurance mandatory in Ireland?

Public liability is not required by law in Ireland. Clients, venues, landlords and local authorities often make it a condition of working with you, and it is relevant wherever your work takes place in other people's spaces: client offices, studios, event venues and exhibition halls. What is Professional Indemnity insurance?

Professional indemnity covers the purely financial loss a client suffers because of a mistake in your professional work: wrong advice, a miscalculation, a missed detail, or an error in something you delivered. It doesn't cover injury or damage to property (that's public liability); it's specifically about the financial damage your client suffers because of your work.

What counts as a professional mistake?

Advice that turns out to be wrong, a calculation or specification error, or an error in a report or design they relied on.

Who is it for?

People whose work is advice, expertise or deliverables rather than physical work: marketing and design, PR and communications, advertising, brand and content consultants, and other advisory professions.

How does the cover respond?

It's written on a claims-made basis: the claim must be made and reported to us while your policy runs.

Switching to us from another insurer?

Work from up to 5 years back is covered, provided your previous policy would have covered the claim.

Leaving?

Claims about work done while you were insured must be reported before your policy ends, unless run-off cover is arranged. Run-off cover is cover that keeps responding to claims about past work after the policy itself has ended.

Cover that fits your profession

You select your activities when you apply, so the policy and its exclusions match what you actually advise on and deliver. Get your cover from €10.80 per month with Insify.

How to choose the right insurance as a marketing professional?

Criteria to compare:

  • The cover offered: it should match the work you actually do, from campaign strategy and copywriting to design, events and PR. Every discipline you declare should be covered, including the ones you only do occasionally.

  • The price: compare premiums, but an attractive price can hide exclusions that matter for marketing work, such as competitions or claims about results.

  • The excess: know what stays at your own expense when a claim happens, and check it on both covers rather than one.

  • The exclusions: watch for undeclared disciplines, work outside the activities you named, and marketing that promises guaranteed results.

  • The service: a reachable provider, and a clear answer on how you reach them and how quickly when a claim happens.

Mistakes to avoid: taking a generic policy because it is quick to buy, then finding that the one discipline generating most of your fees was never declared. To secure your business today, discover our Public Liability and Professional Indemnity cover.

Answers to your questions about our insurance for marketing professionals

How much does marketing insurance cost in Ireland?

Public liability starts from €7.55 per month and professional indemnity from €10.80 per month. If you take both, the two premiums are added together. What you actually pay depends on the activities you declare, your turnover, the cover limit you choose and the excess you accept. A solo marketing consultant working from a home office will normally pay less than a 10-person agency running events and shoots. You get the exact figure from the online quote before you commit to anything.

Do marketing and advertising professionals need professional indemnity insurance in Ireland?

It is not compulsory under Irish law, but it is the cover that matches how you earn: your work is advice, strategy and deliverables, so the realistic claim against you is financial loss rather than injury. It is also often a contractual matter, because client contracts and public tenders frequently set an insurance requirement you have to meet before you can sign. If you advise on campaigns, write copy, design assets or manage a launch, it is worth checking what your own contracts ask for.

Is public liability insurance mandatory for marketing professionals in Ireland?

No, public liability is not required by law in Ireland. It becomes a practical requirement rather than a legal one: clients, venues, landlords and local authorities often make it a condition of letting you work on their premises or at their event. For marketing work it is relevant whenever you are in someone else's space, so shoots, launches, exhibition stands and client site visits. Most marketing work involves other people's premises at some point, and a single accident there is what this cover responds to.

Am I covered if a client claims my work caused them a financial loss?

That is what professional indemnity is for: purely financial loss a client suffers because of a mistake in your professional work, with no injury or property damage involved. A misprinted contact detail, an error in a document they relied on or a missed detail in something you delivered all fall in this territory. Two limits apply: the policy is written on a claims-made basis, so the claim has to be made and reported while your policy is running, and claims that turn on promised or guaranteed results are excluded. Declare every discipline you work in, because the policy responds to the activities you named.

What insurance does a PR or communications consultant need in Ireland?

The same two covers as the rest of this sector, for the same reasons. Professional indemnity is the cover most often relevant, because a public relations or communications claim is almost always about financial loss from advice, a document or a piece of timing that went wrong. Public liability sits alongside it for the physical side of the work: press events, media days, filming and client premises. You can take both out together in one Insify policy, with the cover limit and excess set to match your business.

What is an excess, and how does it work?

The excess is the part of a claim you pay yourself, and the rest is paid under the policy. If a claim settles at €5,000 and your excess is €500, you pay the €500 and the remaining €4,500 is covered. A higher excess lowers your premium, and a lower excess costs more each month but leaves less with you when something goes wrong. You choose it when you take out the policy, and the options available depend on your turnover. It applies per claim, not once a year.

Is my own equipment or my client data covered?

No, to both. This policy covers your liability to other people, not your own property and not your data risk. Laptops, cameras, lighting, phones, studio kit and your office contents are not insured under public liability or professional indemnity. Cyber is also outside this policy: a data breach, a ransomware incident or a data protection investigation is not covered here, which matters for this line of work because client lists, campaign data and creative files sit on your systems. If a claim involves damage to someone else's property caused by your work, that is public liability. Own equipment and cyber are separate types of policy and Insify does not currently sell them in Ireland.

What is not covered?

The main exclusions for this sector are set out in full in the covered-and-not-covered list on this page, and your policy documents are the complete statement. The ones worth knowing before you buy: unsolicited communications to a consumer, including unsolicited messages by telephone or electronic means; organising or hosting prize draws, lotteries or other games of chance; predictions or calculations about promised coupons, discounts or other prizes in advertising; infringement of any patent; contractual clauses that increase your liability; and promising or guaranteeing results. Several of those are things marketing teams do routinely, so read that list properly rather than assuming. Terms, conditions and underwriting criteria may apply.
